Final Major Project

Back to School Gym Class

During my Pre-Collection (Capsule) I began experimenting with Patchwork techniques using the cover seam stitch which is frequently used in sports and leisure wear. I enjoyed investigating this new approach to creating knitted garments, therefore I decided to develop these techniques into my Final Collection.

Due to my athleisure aesthetic, my concept has been inspired by sports I used to play when I was in School. I was inspired by the markings on sports courts as these lines can represent stitch lines like cover seams, colour blocking and repeated pattern ideas. I wanted my colour palette to be bright, fun and colourful, representing by the endorphins you feel during and after playing sport.

Not only am I inspired by the sport environment, but also the physical changes exercise makes to the body, I developed digital knitwear designs inspired by human body mapping for the Shima Industrial Machine, these designs show the muscles of the human body through single bed knit and a mesh like structure between.

Keeping up with contemporary typography trends, I designed my own graphics to be knitted on the Shima, this includes motivational phrases inspired sports teams.

3D Printing

I investigated 3D Printed Fashion as part of my Final Project,I researched other Fashion Designers who have used 3D printing in their collections such as Danit Peleg,to see what the best plastic is to use. I collaborated with a Product Design student to help me with creating the necessary CAD files used for 3D printing.

3D printing is another approach Fashion Designers are using towards a more sustainable future. 3D printing reduces shipping, fabric waste and the sampling process. Garments can be simulated on CAD and ready to wear once printed. 3D printing has the possibility to use recycled plastics, for example; recycled plastic bottles from the ocean. It is also possible to use PLA which is a biodegradable plastic.

Yarn

I have used 100% cotton yarns in my collection, so that my garments are easily recycled. I have used Egyptian Organic Cotton so that the amount of water and pesticides used to grow the cotton is reduced.
